Unable to join friend or friend join me.

We're having trouble joining each other and we've tried different methods like going onto each others steam profile and join there, or send an invite to the lobby or game, and even tried to join by search on the local games. Nothing is working and I would really like to wonder how to fix this so that we can play together. Thank you for you time.
