White screen (of death...)

Hello,
I'm using steamOS and update 0.9 was working fine, for a while...
Now, when I try to start the program I get a completely white screen. I can hear asoundtrack in teh background, but just a white screen. If I move the mouse I sometimes get a rectangle of green or black, which occasionally expands too. Sometimes I get a flash of other coloured rectangles... Tried again yesterday and tried randomly 'tabbing' and pressing 'enter' - ended up with a video playing in the background (ie behind the whiteness) (Far Cry I think?).
I've tried reinstalling, 'validating' content, opening in windowed mode... nothing helping!
Anyway, specs as follows:
SteamOS 2.0 update 1:2.117
3.2GHz
2 Cores, 4 threads
3.8GB system memory
NVIDIA GEFORCE GPU/PCIe/SSE2 video card. Driver version: 4.5.0 nvidia 381.22
Video memory 2.0GB
**Update whilst writing this message - randomly clicking on the screen has opened up the launch menu page - which is fine!). So, it appears that there's another menu before that(?) that's causing the problem. So, I can get to the proper start menu if I randomly click (and accidentally hit the right spot) on the white screen i get after launch...***
