A Like button in the forums allows the poster of content to know that someone has viewed their content and liked their content enough to log into their account and press the like button.
I also personally use the like button to allow a user know that I have read their content, however have nothing further to contribute to the thread at the moment.
I am attaching some small pictures of another forum I frequent to illustrate what a like system could look like.
