Is there no better way to build a bridge?

I wanted to reach an island on a custom map that someone made, but since the distance between the islands wasn't "suspension bridge friendly" I first had to build a set of staircases high enough to overlap, and then drop a few of my bricktrons down onto the other island to build from the other side.

For whatever reason I still could not construct a suspension bridge, even after bringing the two sides a bit closer, so instead I had to do what's shown on the image below.

Is there really no better way of doing this?
I seem to remember back before 0.9, it was possible to build fairly straight wooden bridges out of logs and planks.
But with beams it doesn't seem to be possible to build anything longer than 4 units in length even when using braces, which isn't anywhere near long enough to cross that sort of gap.

Some feedback or help on this matter would be appreciated

  • You can dig a tunnel to start your construction from below. Then you build a stairway to reach the other side. Finally, you turn that stairway into an half-aqueduct (fill it with bricks as you find it the more efficient until you have a flat road on the top, which should be the ground floor). It will take more time to build and needs accuracy in the beginning, but will be faster to cross.
And you can gain a few bricks by finishing your bridge with a suspended one.

I'm lost, could you show what you mean?
  • Ok, i'll make a demo as soon as i can.

    Here is the demo:
First you measure the size of the bridge you want to make.
Then you make a tunnel to start building the arch at a lower level.
Then you build the arch from the tunnel.

Make it at least 4 voxels wide. I had a small bug (cf section bugs) that prevent me from making directly a 4-voxel wide arch, so I enlarge it from the center.

Fill the center of the arch to have it level with the ground.

    Finish the bridge.

Here I used one suspension bridge to finish it. It may be done without it, but will be much longer and would need to start way below.
The wooden planks are here used for a cosmetic effect and make the bridge even wider.
  • And here is the save if you want to see it more closely.
You will find that the base of the arch is messy, it is due to a bug already exposed.

Oh that's actually pretty cool, thanks!

  • I love this bridge/tunnel. nice work.
